AEO (answer engine optimization)

AEO is shaping content so answer engines return it directly. How it differs from GEO and LLMO, and what to check in a course.

AEO is the practice of writing and structuring content so that an answer engine returns it as the answer, rather than as a link a reader has to click. The unit of work is the question and the reply: clear question phrasing, a direct response near the top, supporting detail underneath, and markup that makes the block easy to lift. Neighbouring terms overlap. SEO is the whole field. GEO points at generative systems that compose an answer out of material pulled from many pages. LLMO points at the models themselves. AEO is older than all of them in practice, because featured snippets and voice assistants asked for the same shape years before chat interfaces did. For a buyer, that history is a warning. A course can cover AEO by recycling a snippet module from an earlier syllabus, with nothing on how chat assistants pick and cite sources. Read the module list and check whether the exercises end at a snippet. 19 of 44 programs teach it (12 unverified) (checked 18 September 2026).

Example

A payroll software firm rewrites its help centre so each page opens with the question a customer would type and answers it in two sentences before the walkthrough. Six weeks later, an assistant asked when overtime must be paid returns that two-sentence answer and names the firm as the source. Traffic barely moves. Branded search does.
